The Entrelac Continues

Posted under Gifts and Charity & scarves

After finishing the my first entrelac scarf, I decided to start a second in brighter colours. This scarf is intended for a small person, 3 years of age, so I thought the bright colour scheme would suit her well. I’ll have to confer with her mother to see if she’d like the colours and to find out what length would be appropriate. Apparently I’m just not done with the hated weaving in of ends.

Mess Of Ends

Posted under scarves

I’m still chugging away on the Danica Scarf, but the more progress I make, the more ends I have to deal with. It feels like I spend more time sewing in ends then I do knitting. Still, I persevere and I’ve got over 30 inches done so far. Not bad for someone who is catching a cold.

Speaking of which, the cold probably explains the brevity of this post.

Five Things I’m Thankful For

Posted under meanderings

Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate it. I had an extremely relaxing Thanksgiving day. A friend of mine said that she picked up the practice of journaling five things she’s grateful for every day. While I’m not nearly so diligent as that, I thought this was an extremely opportune day to give it a try.

  1. I’m thankful that I got to catch up with an old friend, who coincidentally taught me how to spin. She’s also the one who helped me purchase my Schacht and lent me her Majacraft Suzie, which is also why it became my dream wheel. (Excuse the repeat photograph, but times are hard when it comes to scrounging for blog fodder.)
  2. I’m thankful that the Dallas Cowboys won today and now has a star quarterback that has enabled me to fall in love with the team once again. And let me tell you all that he ain’t too bad to look at either. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
  3. I’m thankful for all the great friends I’ve made in the past year through knit-blogging and for all the friends that have stuck with me through thick and thin.
  4. I’m thankful for the wonderful mother I have. She’s been a real support to me over the years and has stood by me when there was absolutely no need to and when a lot of other people would have simply cut their loses and torn neck for nothing for the hills.
  5. Finally, I’m thankful for the cats that I’ve been blessed with over the years and for the cats I have now. They’ve taught me so much and they’ve given me so much love and amusement. They are truly a joy and a treasure.

Ugh! It’s ugly!

Posted under Gifts and Charity

The Jayne Hat is finally finished and boy is it ugly. The ear flaps give me endless grief. The ear flaps uglify the whole business, but I suppose if I’m gonna do the hat, I’m gonna do it Right.

I don’t have the specs for the whole business, but here’s what I do have: Lamb’s Pride Bulky in Raspberry for the ear flaps; size 10.5US needles; and the pattern was taken from here. I didn’t use a pompom. Nor did I leave the strings on the ends of the ear flaps. I’ll ask David if he prefers a string to tie the hat under his chin. If he does then I’ll just add some i-cord.

This was the first knitted item I’ve ever finished that was knit by request. I consider it a testament of the strength of my friendship and the strength of my will. Of course the fact that the Lamb’s Pride is so silky soft sure did help.

I’m not sure if I can get this to David in time for his birthday, which is on the 29th of November, but I’m sure going to try!

Fracs! Fracs!

Posted under Gifts and Charity & scarves

The quest to outfit my close friends in handknits continues as I started the Danica scarf last night with some various worsted weight wools that I have lying around. (This is a really bad picture of it, but it’s the best I could do. Artistic photographer I am not.) It’s been great trying out a new technique and the instructions are very clear and easy to follow. Somehow I’ve even learned how to knit backwards, even though I’m not doing anything fancy like purling in the front and back yet.

I’m hoping this will be good gift for a male friend and I’m worried that because it’s not machine washable it will wind up either not being used or becoming fabulously felted. I’m hesitant to broach the subject with him, because I’m about as subtle as a steam train when it comes to bringing up these types of things up with friends. I tend to be blunt and honest to the point of tears.

I figure I can always give this scarf to the Dulaan Project and order some superwash yarn for my friend if I decide to go the safer route with my friend. I’d love to hear what you all have to say about giving handwash items to friends. Any disaster stories you want to share? Any encouraging heartwarming stories?
