How can you knit too much?

This is what happens when you knit too much! At least this is what the doctor says. It appears as though I have Repetitive Motion Disorder. The treatment plan is rest and painkillers. This means not knitting. *gasps* No Knitting?! Surely you jest? Right? This is some kind of joke? Doctor? Doc?

Ha! No, it’s not a joke. But it’s not a complete truth either, since my doctor is also a realistic and sympathetic human being. *phew* I can knit as long as I rest my right upper appendage regularly.

With the amount of pain involved it hasn’t been that hard of a prescriptin to follow. Yesterday I knit 3 rows. Count them! Three! Rows! Gack. Today I knit 4 rows. Double gaaaaack. I haven’t even been able to type much. Thus, the long absence from blogland. Besides, no one wants to hear Opal whine! But I’m going to end up in the looney bin if this keeps up much longer.

So the brace you see gracing my wrist is a new one that I just got from the orthopedic shop. I’m hoping it will improve my pain levels and so far so good! Especially since I received my Zephyr from Sarah’s Yarns.

Plus, my brilliant and amazing friend Liz suggested I start designing while I recuperate. So I’ve been fiddling with my own stitch patterns. Nothing to write home about, but it’s terribly exciting. I’m hoping to get Margaret Stove’s Creating Original Hand Knitted Lace from Schoolhouse Press sometime soon and get more tips on getting what’s in my head charted and on “paper.”

Now I’m off to play with my yarn! This Bottle Green Zephy has been crying to be the Forest Path Stole for ages and ages. Now that I actually have the yarn I might be able to answer the call.

Your lacework is gorgeous! I love the Moon Dance Stole (which I’m also working on along with the Forest Path).

I’m sorry about the wrist. I had to stop crocheting because it hurt my wrist too much. Knitting doesn’t seem to affect it quite as bad, but socks seem to bother my hands if I knit too much. Something that helps me is to change projects such as socks on dpns and lace. Slightly different motions.

    Opal,
So sorry to hear about the wrist, but hang in there. It does get better. I am truly excited to hear of your plans to design lace. You will do an excellent job, I know. And count on me to purchase your patterns. Warmest regards from unbelievably hot and muggy Wisconsin.

Hang in there! I have had issues with wrists and thought that they might be the knitting….turns out my workstation at work had issues….

So besides knitting, spend some time looking at your computer workstations at home and make some changes.

Also it is clearly time to consider a knitting machine!

Hope your wrist is better soon! I’ve just had a look at your shawls and they are awesome – enjoy your spell designing some lace – perhaps one day we’ll be able to KAL one of your patterns.

    Opal,
I am so sorry. You know I commiserate. The injection and the two week vacation did the trick for me. I hope you find relief.

Sorry to hear about your wrists. How about pick/throw or left-handed knitting? It must be difficult to have that beautiful cone of Zephyr staring at you, asking for a shawl… hang in there!

I blame the amazing lace. I’ve knitted nothing but lace for about three months and I have RSI too! (but I refuse to let it get to me, I’ll just knit through the pain). Hope your wrist feel better soon.

I’m so sorry that you are laid up! I live in fear of that happening. I, too, think I would go crazy if I couldn’t knit! Hope you feel better soon :)

Oh no!!! I was wondering where you had gotten to. So sorry that it wasn’t a vacation, but an injury. Yuck! Hope the new brace helps your recovery take place much quicker.

    Love the bottle green Zephyr.

I was thinking the same thing as Liz. You could design! And ask for volunteer knitters to try out your patterns.
