I grabbed some yarn out of the sock yarn bin the other day for my next pair. It kind of languished for awhile, but I finally cast on yesterday. I have no idea what kind of yarn it is as the lable is MIA, but it was in the sock yarn bin. Thus, it must be sock yarn.
However, as I was knitting with it, I began to wonder if it really was sock yarn. It’s very thin and I could go out on a limb and call it laceweight. Even some of the girls at knit night commented on how thin the yarn is. Not a good sign.
Take a look. (Please excuse my dishwater hands. Also, they yarn is blue. Not purple! Stoopid camera.)
I’ve knit about an inch of ribbing and I like the way it feels. Only these socks are meant to be a gift and I’m worried about them wearing out if this yarn is a lace yarn rather then a sock yarn.
So I have a dilemma. Continue to knit this as a sock or choose a yarn that I know will hold up. The practical choice is to choose another yarn, but I do so love knitting with this yarn. What with me being me, the decision on what to do with this yarn could be an epic battle.
My knitting mojo is really out of whack. First there’s the FLS with the gauge issues. Now we have the sock with yarn issues.
Issues, people! Serious. Knitting. Issues.
Thank the fiber gods for spinning.
That’s more Butterscocth for a custom order. I loves me my 80-count Merino.
And since it’s ECF.. why not a cat picture?
He doesn’t look too pleased, does he?
TGIF! I am so glad this week is over. Have a fabulous weekend!

Ok, I think the purple yarn is ugly and that you should send it to me right now. I will be able to use – I mean dispose – of it properly!
The spinning came out wonderful! Go you!!
**hugs**

PS – even if I saw it, and it’s as blue as you say, in my mind – it’s still purple ;-)

Maybe go down a needle size? Call them “summer socks with ventilation?”
It’s pretty. Knit on.
Oh and give that kitteh a pet for me. :D
February 6th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
No no, you can’t do that to Megan. Send it to me and I will take care of the issue.
Totally, yeah, that’s what you must do. You should NOT start a gift sock in some other yarn and knit a lacy shawl with that stuff. No way.
February 6th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Oh no! It seems that everyone has issues, including Sammy! I would change to a sock-weight yarn, make a shawl or something with the lace weight and listen to Sammy’s silent glare – “keep that camera out of my face!” He is so cute!
February 6th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
I would say it’s laceweight as well. Personally, if the socks are to be a gift, I’d want to knit them from something I know will hold up, and maybe use that yarn for something besides socks. A scarf or shawl, maybe.
But that’s just me.
February 6th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
I think you yarn is Claudia Handpainted sock yarn or Cherry Tree Hill farms sock yarn. Your butterscotch yarn is gorgeous. Cute photo of Sammy.
February 6th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
He looks adorable.
I don’t know sock yarn from lace yarn unless it’s labeled that way. I tend to knit whatever. Not always a good idea…..
February 6th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
Well whatever the yarn, it’s gorgeous! Can you go down in size and change the patt?
February 6th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
Sammy does look peeved! LOL
The blue yarn is pretty no matter what it’s weight.
February 6th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Love the butterscotch. Sam seems to be plotting and scheming. Be afraid, be very afraid.
Hey, BSG tonight…we never discussed it. Oh man. I’m worried. It’s a bad sign when you just can’t see any happiness coming up for your favorite tv characters. sigh.
February 6th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
it’s hard for me to frog a project that i’ve started until i know FOR SURE that it’s not a good yarn/pattern match. i’d press on but probably do more of a lace leg. on the heel and foot i’d knit in something to reinforce…like wooley nylon?
February 6th, 2009 at 6:36 pm
i’m not a yellow person, but i love the muted shades of butterscotch. as for the sock yarn…i agree with roseann, it kinda looks like cth and knitting with cth is such a nice experience….hope you have a relaxing weekend….
February 6th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
I have to say I sgree with everyone who said since its a gift knit with something you know will hold up for sure. You can always use the other yarn for something else. Such a cute kitty & the butterscotch is pretty.
February 6th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
Danger! Stop knitting! Turn back! Choose another! Otherwise, you’ll be worrying through knitting two socks, the gifting, the recipient wearing them out…that’s maybe YEARS of worrying! Agggh! That’s more than I can contemplate…
February 7th, 2009 at 2:03 am
Ohs noes! Stop knitting and spin until inspiration strikes. :D The butterscotch is beautiful!
February 7th, 2009 at 2:58 am
Well, I have an alternative suggestion. Perhaps continue with the socks and let the recipient know that this pair is intended for *light* duty. Like keeping the tootsies war whilst reading or knitting but not for tucking into tennis shoes or boots.
I don’t see why that wouldn’t work just fine :)
Your young man there – the feline one, that is – is a beautiful fellow. He does definitely have that “I could have you be-headed” look on his face though…
February 7th, 2009 at 3:08 am
Love that yarn you spun up…sorry, can’t help ya with the yarn dilemma, I seem to make the wrong choice often!
February 7th, 2009 at 3:26 am
Some sock yarn is finer. I’m thinking of Schaeffer Anne or some of Lisa Souza’s handpaints, but there likely others. They’ve held up well for me, but I did knit them on a smaller needle than I would normally use.
February 7th, 2009 at 4:14 am
Grumpy kitty face! :D
I would be nervous about using the yarn for socks if it was really, noticeable thinner than normal sock yarn. But maybe knitting it on a smaller needle to make it sturdier?
February 7th, 2009 at 5:00 am
I would save this yarn for a lace piece and grab some well known sock yarn. I think it would be gorgeous in lace. Cute, cute kittie!
February 7th, 2009 at 5:21 am
I made a lovely pair of socks with Jojoland cashmere. Delicate–but very comfortable. So finish them and don’t over think it!
February 7th, 2009 at 7:29 am
I think the sock yarn is gorgeous – I’d make the socks -just tell the recipient that they are delicate – I’m sure they will be beautiful. Your handspun is gorgeous, as always!
February 7th, 2009 at 8:37 am
Hmmmm. It does seem kind of loose knitting for a sock. Going down a needle size or two or double stranding the yarn may be options.
The spinning is beautiful.
February 7th, 2009 at 10:01 am
Compare the yarn to something with a label. I’m thinking Cherry Tree Hill looking at it. The base yarn is familiar.
I agree with Dave. (Hai Dave!) Not all fingering weight yarns are created equal. Some are much thicker than others. Look at yarnage on different labels and you’ll see the difference.
Do you have something else this person might also like? You could always return to this mystery yarn later on and do something for yourself.
It really has been a week, hasn’t it? Thank goodness it’s Saturday.

That Yarn for the sock is lovely, and your cat is awesome. I’ve seen that look before from my Frisky. As for the sock, I would say keep knitting it, but add in a reinforcing thread (Jawool or Jawoll, not sure how it’s spelled) Good luck!
February 8th, 2009 at 11:09 am
I think you should try knitting a little swatch and washing it. You never know, it may floof up and be just right sock yarn already.
Yummy handspun, spinning is always good when there’s a knitting kerfluffle.
Sammy’s so cute.
February 9th, 2009 at 2:05 am
If in doubt, I would suggest changing. It is lovely yarn, but maybe not quite right for gift socks. The knitting mojo will come around soon. Until then, enjoy that beautiful spinning you do so well.
This will be a better week.

Sammy is ticked that once again you’ve put the flash in his face! Put it down, Momma, and cuddle me instead?
I am with the majority, of course. That’s a gorgeous purple (bad camera!) – pretty pretty purple…and you should never knit anything but durable sock yarn for socks! So mail the laceweight to me and I’ll dispose of it properly – ok…busted. I’d knit it – lace. Not socks.
(((hugs)))
February 9th, 2009 at 6:06 am
Maybe knitting it in a tighter gauge (more stitches) would make the socks sturdier.
February 10th, 2009 at 5:39 am
Hi! I’m new to your blog. It’s gorgeous!! I love all the spinning eye candy!! I’m a new spinner so your work is incredibly inspirational!!!
February 10th, 2009 at 6:16 pm
I agree…that’s an awful lot of worrying. ;o)
Gorgeous yarn!
Pretty kitty!!
