I’ll say it again and again,

car knitting rocks.  I started a pair of socks for my friend Kai on October 20th. I’ve managed to finish the first of the pair without ever having knit a stitch at home. I will admit to also working on these during my Aloha Knitters meetings, but the majority of the knitting done on these socks were done in the car while running errands.

You might notice there’s a bit of size difference between her foot and mine. She’s a size 10/11 shoe and I’m a size 7. This makes me even more proud to be done with the first sock. (I’m washing the socks before I give them to her.)

I also managed to get some work done on the second sock.

I don’t have much experience knitting socks for others. This makes me a little nervous that the sock won’t fit her even though I have measurements from her. I remain hopeful.

Right now I’m on a mission to knit socks for others. I simply have too many socks for a person living in the tropics. I think I have something like 18 pairs, which is ridiculous. I do plan on keeping special pairs for myself, like the Mingus socks that are currently hibernating.  But I like to keep a plain sock on the needles for the car and for knit group, so those are going to friends.

In other news, Sammy is growing. The vet said he’s probably going to grow to be over 10 lbs and I’m a little sad about that. It’s not that I won’t love him if he gets bigger, I just think he’s the perfect size as he is now. I guess I don’t want my baby to grow up!

Sammy looks adorable! I love kittens… and BIG FAT HAIRY cats. Yeah, I don’t know.

    Happy Wednesday.

  2. Hattie Says:

I’ve knit socks for several ppl so far and they always seem to fit right, so I wouldn’t worry much, I mean unless you’re way off, which you shouldn’t be with measurements…it’ll be fine. :)

awwwww…I just love Sammy! and i wish i could knit or read in the car! i get really bad headaches so it’s just music for me. i probably would have lots and lots of socks/hats/scarves if i could knit while running errands!

    Hush up.

Oh, and I’ve got a great site that gives you shoe sizes in inches. Let me know if you want it.

    xo

    He’s so cute.
His growing up will happen slowly, so you’ll get used to it. And wonder how he managed to get so big – suddenly!
    :)
Meezer is an 11-12 pounder. A BIG girl.
(and warm when she snuggles under the covers – which is good in our cold autumn nights!)
    (((hugs)))

  6. Dee Says:

Sammy may be getting bigger, but he’s not losing his cute factor. I swear that kitty smiles.

  7. Roseann Says:

Sammy is too cute! Kai’s socks look great. I know what you mean about knitting socks for others. I find socks are very forgiving and it looks like they will fit her from observing your petite foot in the sock. I love to knit in the car while Al drives and I always bring socks along.

  8. Carrie Says:

I love it how cats just zone like that with their eyes closed. If my dogs tried that they’d fall right over.

  9. Meredith Says:

Sammy will be a huge wonderful boy who will take over your lap when you decide to knit lace. He will sleep by your face when it’s 85 degrees and 80 per cent humidity. He will shed on your sock projects. In short, he will be a Cat. Note the capital “c.”

I love those socks, btw. What yarn? Inquiring minds and all that.

    big hugssssssssssss

Sammy is adorable. Ten pounds of Sammy will be ten pounds of adorable.

What? Not much call for socks in your neck of the beach? Wait until Global Warming triggers the Ice Age. You’ll be totally prepared.

You’re not driving and knitting, are you? (Mind you, I knit at stoplights/signs/stopped traffic but people are always asking me that. )

I love car knitting! I always have a pair of socks stashed under the seat for emergencies as well!

Handsome socks–and Sammy, who looks like Laptop’s twin. is also handsome :)

  12. Kai Says:

Ooo! Yay! [btw: how to freak out your non-knitting co-workers - force them to look at socks in progress online and babble about how they are being made for you]

When I make Fuzzy Feet for my petite Momma, I know they are at the correct pre-felting size when they fit me. XD

*hopping up and down with glee* <– no second sock pressure or anything

  13. hakucho Says:

Beautiful socks! I always have a project to take with me too, but usually not socks. It’s just too easy for me to mess them up ;)

    happy knitting :)

  14. loribird Says:

Oh you whiner, I knit size 10 socks all the time! (LOL)

Sammy, you are gorgeous; don’t get much bigger or you won’t fit my lap properly when I come to visit!

  15. Hetty Says:

Nice sock! Who’s doing the driving while you knit socks? Sammy is growing up, but he is still very cute! He reminds me of Tobias, a huge male cat we had years ago. I love big, tabbies!

  16. debbie Says:

sammy is pretty! nice socks and funny looking sock picture – thanks for making me smile!

  17. Jeanne Says:

Sammy is so cute – what a happy face! The sock is gorgeous – what yarn is it?

  18. Barb Says:

Sammy is cute. Looks like my folk’s cat. Nice sock!

  19. Veronica Says:

Ohhh… those are some great colors! That by chance is not the Slip-Stitch-Rib Pattern is it? It looks like the ones I just finished from Sensational Knit Socks!

    See you tomorrow? :)

  20. Sarah Says:

I am sometimes amazed at how much knitting can be done during otherwise wasted time. I am with you on your concerns about knitting socks for others. I think you have armed yourself with all the information you can, and hope it all works wonderfully.

  21. Kim Says:

I like a big cat. Keep growing, boy!
I’m impressed with your car knitting.

Sorry to be so incommunicado of late. I’m sick, and weary of being sick. Ugh. Hope you’re feeling better. Barring some miracle, I shan’t be at MJ tomorrow night.

  22. Robbyn Says:

The only person besides myself that I have knit socks for is my dad – and it wasn’t too difficult. I found this chart:

    http://www.rei.com/rei/gearshop/sizefinder/footwear.html

…to be very useful in estimating foot length. I’m sure your friend will be thrilled to death with your gift. To me, *nothing* says love/friendship/gratitude etc… like a hand made gift.

Sammy is looking very handsome indeed. To me, 10 lbs would be relatively small. In his heyday, Goldie was about 15 lbs – and that wasn’t padding – that was all cat. Of course now that he’s getting on in years, he’s a little lighter :)

  23. limedragon :-: Harriet Says:

As long as you’ve got the measurements and trust your knitting, they’ll turn out wonderfully! Love the colors. :)

    Hi Sammy!

  24. Elizabeth L in Apex, NC Says:

I promise you that Sammy will still be your baby, even if he gets really big. I had a kitty – Ashes – who got *down* to 12 pounds because the doctor said he should diet (and looked awful, ribs showing… we let him go back to 16 pounds) and he was always my sweet baby. It just makes it harder to knit with them in your lap. :)

  25. tiennie Says:

Great sock! I love being a passenger for car knitting too! :)

  26. Agnes Says:

You know, you are just like those mothers who feel sad when their kids grow out of the cutie 4-yo stage … LOL!

  27. Lauren Says:

18 pairs is a lot for someone living in such a warm climate – I don’t think I have that many myself in the Northeast! I always have a worried moment about fit when knitting socks for others, too, but it tends to work out… hand knitting is a little forgiving in that way. Also, I tend to knit socks for other people top down – one can always rip and reknit the length of the foot and toe easily that way!

  28. Yarn Hungry Hog Says:

    Your Sammy is a tabby.
My Jake is a tabby. He was such a skinny little kitten to the point he looked ugly.
Then he grew into a great-looking tabby. But he kept growing.
Jake is now 13. He had expanded…….yup…….expanded to a solid 16-pounder. He loves to stretch. When stretched, he’s 31 inches long, from front paws to hind paws.
So don’t be suprised if Sammy turns out to be a bit bigger than 10 pounds. Because Sammy looks a bit like Jake. And I bet you he’s very intelligent, huh?
