This is my cat Onyx. She’s 18 years old and she had started losing weight which was extremely alarming considering she was already very tiny. Last year she weighed 9 lbs and then when I took her for a checkup this year, she had lost 2.5lbs. That’s a lot of weight to lose when she had nothing to lose to begin with.
So I started feeding her the kind of cat food that is the equivalent to McDonald’s for us bipeds. So far it seems like she’s gaining the weight back, but I’m still really worried about her. She’s been with me since I was 16 years old and she’s helped me through so much in life. If anyone has any idea about what kind of food I can give her to help her gain weight, please let me know!

In the meantime I’ll leave you with what is hopefully a better picture of the Triangles Within Triangles shawl that I did in February. The yarn I used is the Peruvian Collection Baby Silk in Aubergine. It’s such a dark purple it almost looks black in the picture, but it really is just a very rich purple. This is just one of my favorite yarns as it is so soft and knitting with it is like knitting with butter yarn. The only thing I don’t like about this particular yarn is that it comes in increments of 109 yards so I’m constantly splicing in new skeins.

Beautiful shawl….splicing, eh? I was wondering about that! I just started my first shawl, and had to switch balls – ugh. I didn’t splice. But back to you – beautiful work – love your shawls!

What did your vet say about the weight loss?

Carine, my vet was clueless as to why she’s losing weight. We had labs done on Onyx and they all came back normal. I’m thinking it might be stress. I moved twice last year then I moved back home with my mother. We also had some workers here in the house.
Jeanne, splicing is pretty easy. And there are no ends to weave in with spit splicing. I found a great tutorial once. Let me see if I can find it again.

My 14 yr old cat lost a lot of weight, too — equivalent to 1/4 of her weight, which is very drastic for an already tiny cat. Sometime about two years ago, she weighed in at 7 pounds. Last year, somewhere around 4 pounds. Now, 3 pounds, 13 ounces. Earlier this year, she was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Now on a Friskies Wet Varieties, she is slowly gaining the weight back. She is also on medication, which helps her to gain weight and keeps her healthy. Does this sound like something your cat has gone through? Definitely take her to your vet and have them run a thyroid test.

Hey Alicia.
They ran all those tests when I took her in. She is gaining some weight back now though. I’ve been feeding her Meow Mix junk which she loves. The vet basically said to feed her anything she’ll eat. So Meow Mix it is!
Thanks for writing! I can sympathise with the worry you must have gone through when your cat lost weight. I had a cat that lost a lot of his weight and he had hyperthyroidism too.
The medication made such a great difference.
