The return of words.

Posted under miscellaneous

You all know that since I finished a pair of socks I’d have to start another.  So just because there has been spinning does not mean there has not been knitting. It just hasn’t been around in abundance.

The new sock is being knit with some Trekking XXL I bought from The Knitter’s Underground while I was on vacation. The pattern is the ingenious Twisted Tweed and I loves it.

I took the sock with me to the graduation party I sweated at. I should have gotten a picture of the sock with the graduate, but to tell you the truth I didn’t know the graduate all that well. I’m friends with his mother and she was sweatier then I was, so I didn’t want to bother her.

Still. The sock received much admiration from the other folks at my table. Despite the wonderful hula show and the eating and the chattering and the eating and the endless raffle prizes and the eating and the wonderful music and the eating, I was able to get some knitting done.

The colors in this sock cheer me to no end. A good thing too since my current spinning project is rather monochromatic. But I’m on the second bobbin of two which means I’ll soon be done with it.

I really hope my swap partner likes it. It’s not very exciting. I’m painfully nervous about the whole thing. This is my first swap in years and I really want it to go well. I’ve been gathering various Hawaiian good in addition to the fiber I’m sending. Gosh, I hope she doesn’t hate Hawaii. :-o

Here’s a few non-sequitors. Did anyone see the Home Run Derby? Josh Hamilton kicked ass! Twenty-eight home runs in the first round! I was really sad that he didn’t take home the trophy, but he still went down in history.

Also, it’s really humid here. I washed five skeins of yarn yesterday and they’re still not dry.  This makes me growl in a sad, pathetic way. I know that’s rather self-contradictory, but there you have it.

Finally, it’s a rare shot of the three amigos. So rare that I had to take it at night and adjust the exposure to accommodate the super crappy lighting. You may all laugh at my horrid 70’s orange carpeting.

Happy Tuesday everyone!  Thanks for reading. :)

You are a busy bee. The spinning is looking fantastic. It will definitely be appreciated by your swap buddy; trust me. The trekking looks like handspun. It is turning out well. Your cats are too cute resting on the stairs. And there is nothing wrong with orange carpeting–it is retro chic!

Who doesn’t love Hawaii? Silly Opal.

The spinning and the sock both look wonderful. As do the cats. I feel ya on the carpet. It looks oddly familiar.

    xo

The Trekking socks are really stunning. I just wish the yarn were softer. And you didn’t use “floon.” Here I give you a word and you don’t even use it. Tsk.

Harry loves the orange carpeting. It goes with his hip-hop dance costume.

Cool socks! As I am in need of a new sock to knit upon, I may have to try that pattern…

I think the spinning looks great - so Opal’s Pal, if you don’t like it, you can send it to Loribird’s Wool Room, Whitneyville, Maine….

Opal, I have to say, I’ve pictured your Hawaiian home and some of the things in it many times as I’ve read your blog. Never, ever, ever have I imagined orange carpeted stairs. They’ve got character. I think I might actually like them!

Very nice socks! I love the colors.

Not so sure about the stairs, though!

That pattern looks very familiar. ;) (If you don’t remember, I test-knit it for Schrodinger.) Love the color you’re using, too!

Orange carpet, oh my, but how lovely to see all three together!

I should have this right now. Pressie is at the top, Scheyer is in the middle, and Quincy is at the bottom. That is a darling picture. I know your swap partner will LOVE your Hawaiian extras and her yarn. You are working so hard and you spin so beautifully. Delightful twisted tweed socks.

Your spinning is fantastic, your pal will be very very happy! Who *doesn’t* love Hawaii??? :)

  9. Hattie on 15 Jul 2008 at 1:43 pm #

Oooh pretty sock! I like that stitch a lot!

Does anyone HATE Hawaii??? Is that even Possible???

I like the carpet. It’s retro, but at least orange is better than that pea green and yellow they liked to use so much.

The socks are gorgeous - what a great colorway and I love the pattern. Great shot of the cats - what a bunch of cuties!

  11. Dave on 15 Jul 2008 at 1:59 pm #

When you get tired of looking at the monochromatic spinning, just glance at the stairs for a jolt of colour. :-)

    Hate Hawaii? How … gauche.

  12. Carrie K on 15 Jul 2008 at 2:17 pm #

Who could hate Hawaii? Or your swap stuff? No one. That twisted tweed pattern is really cute on a multicolor yarn.

That’s a great picture of the three cats! And now, thanks to Roseann, I think I have the three of them correctly named.

I have had carpeting exactly like that. I might have moved to escape it but I doubt it since I then made wall to wall orange drapes for the new living room window. What can I say? I like orange.

Nice cat portrait. I’m not sayin’ nuthin’ (yikes!) about that orange carpet.

The tweed socks are cool, and my Ravelry queue is getting longer ~ thanks.

Hate Hawaii? How could anyone hate Hawaii? I lived there for a few years when I was little (age 5 - 7ish). Would love to visit again someday.

That’s a really cool pattern! I would have to try it with my striping Trekking yarn to see how it turns out.
Love the 3-amigo picture … the orange carpet may not be my colour of choice, but it is funky!

  15. Laura on 15 Jul 2008 at 6:23 pm #

The socks look great, just added them to the queue. Your spinning is also nice. Your swap person should really like it.

Like the amigos. I bet they are a lot of fun.

  16. Carin on 15 Jul 2008 at 7:53 pm #

The sock and spinning are fantastico!
I think with a bit of help from photo shop, the three amigos’ pic would make a great Halloween card.

  17. Debi on 15 Jul 2008 at 8:12 pm #

    What a lovely family picture!

That carpet Opal…my eyes, my eyes!!! :)

  18. chris on 16 Jul 2008 at 12:33 am #

Very nice. But I am concerned - did you get to eat? And if your swap partner doesn’t like Hawaii - just put my address in with the package and she can forward it to me!!!!

  19. Meredith on 16 Jul 2008 at 4:30 am #

I think you really intensified the color of the carpet to get the lighting right for the photo. Even the orange 70’s carpet I lived with in the 70’s wasn’t that bright! Woo! Love the socks, and if your swap partner doesn’t love that gorgeous yarn and your Hawaii extras, she should probably have her vitals checked. ;-)

I think that pattern is so perfect for trekking yarn. It’s going to be a great pair of socks. Also, the spinning is lovely as always, O.

  21. hetty gruener on 16 Jul 2008 at 2:43 pm #

Great socks! I love that pattern. Will have to try it sometime. The Three Amigos look fantastic against that orange carpet. What a cute family! And your swap partner will surely love that yarn! I know I would!! Oh, yeah, and what’s not to like about Hawaii?

  22. Shell on 18 Jul 2008 at 3:32 am #

Love the cats - the carpet needs some sunglasses though.
    Beautiful Yarn too.

  23. hakucho on 18 Jul 2008 at 3:50 am #

Love your socks…great stitch pattern for the yarn. Thanks for the link…I always love to find new patterns. Love your kitties posing for you on the stairs!

  24. tiennie on 18 Jul 2008 at 9:18 pm #

I love how the colors are blending together in the 1st pics!

  25. tata on 19 Jul 2008 at 8:33 pm #

Wow, I’m rather fond of that orange carpet. The kitties are cute, too! ;)

  26. textillian on 20 Jul 2008 at 1:57 am #

A great pattern/yarn match up on that sock. Of course, I have a weakness for Trekking XXL.

And who could hate Hawaii? I am sure your swappie (?) will love you handspun.

  27. Karen B. on 20 Jul 2008 at 9:15 am #

That tweed texture is terrific! So is the shot of the feline amigos. Peace in our time.
