Transformation.

I was out of commission for a few days this week because I am stupid and didn’t check the label of a wine bottle carefully enough for the sulfates warning. I only had half a glass but I ended up with a really nasty reaction. Lemme tell ya, being doped up on Benadryl really messed up my mojo. I still managed to get a few things done though.

I’m up to the gussets of my second Nanners socks. I’ve decided not to bore you with pictures of the sock though. After awhile, pictures of the same over and over again just get monotonous.

I also finished plying  a couple of 3-ply yarns. I’m calling the first Burnt Sienna. I dyed the roving with Shelly back when I was in Pennsylvania. I love seeing the transformation from roving to finished yarn.

Here’s the roving.

And here’s the yarn.

The second yarn was spun from roving I purchased from MDSW. The name of the colorway is Cherry Blossom and  was dyed by Gale’s Art.

Once again, here’s the roving.

And here’s the finished yarn.

The first yarn surprised me quite a bit with the way it spun up. Somehow I expected more color separation.  Instead there’s more of a blended heathered effect. (Wow, I hope that makes sense.)

The second yarn was a little more predictable, as you can see the colors that were in the roving are noticeably in the finished yarn.  There’s no mistaking that this yarn was spun from that fiber.

One of the main reasons I’m so in love with spinning these days is the rather unexpected results I get when I spin up hand-painted rovings. It’s also why I love doing 3-plies so much. I wonder if I were a better spinner, would the results be so surprising? If so, perhaps ignorance is bliss.

To the American readers out there, Happy Independance Day! To the rest of you, happy Friday! Have a great weekend everybody and thanks for reading. :-)

Your 3-ply looks great! I’m about to ply my first skein on my new wheel. It’s going to be 2-ply.

I’m sorry you got bit by the wine again. Nasty stuff, at least for you!

    take care,

Great stuff! I would never have guessed that the first yarn came from that first roving!

How I do love looking at your spinning, I find it so motivating and inspiriational. They both spun up so beautfully, they are incredible! Thank you for the gentle reminder to take a few notes as I knit, I have a knitting notebook around here somewhere. There is even a sheep on the cover and a table of contents inside. I started using my blog as my notebook yet I do not blog very thoroughly about everything I knit. Happy Fourth!

Boy, don’t ever even open a bottle of Georgia wine. Someone gave one to me (we have 3 wineries close by) and when I pulled the cork, the kitchen smelled like rotten eggs. I poured it down the sink–it wasn’t even fit for cooking with all the sulfites in it.

    Your yarns are spectacular!

    Hope you feel better soon!

And thanks for recommending Woodland Woolworks

The first yarn surprised me too, but I love those colours.

Oooh I get so sick even if I have just three sips of wine. I remember the first time it happened, I was shaking and my heart was pounding and I couldn’t even stand up in the shower. I ended up throwing up and begging God to just let me go to sleep (and I’m not even a big believer in God necessarily). So I’m glad you’re feeling better!

    beautiful yarn!

Gorgeous yarns – my eye especially delights in the Sienna. What a beautiful color – all “blended and heathery” – which makes perfect sense.

I’m sorry to hear about the bad reaction to the sulfates in the wine. Yikes! You want to be a little careful about that, m’dear. Hope you’re having a nice holiday weekend :)

Gorgeous yarns! I especially like the Cherry Blossom.

Sorry to hear about your incident with the wine. I kind of know how it goes. I have multiple allergies and Benadryl and I have come to be intimate companions.

I hope you are having a great holiday weekend!

I’m not a spinner but it is really fascinating to see the transformation to yarn–I’m always surprised too! I think both yarns are gorgeous!

I thought all wines had sulfates in them. But what do I know about wines. I do know that I love your rovings and the yarn you spin with it. Keep that mojo humming! Your work is so inspirational to me!

  19. Barb Says:

Happy fourth. Glad you survived the wine and are back spinning away!

  20. textillian Says:

The yarns look great! I think the closer the colors are (spectrum-wise) in a roving, the more they will blend together (by the eye) when spun. Just my theory on it.

  21. Kelley Says:

As always, the yarns are delicious! I’m glad you’re feeling better!

  22. Shell Says:

Love the yarns, you are such a good spinner. Sorry about the reaction to the wine. Glad you are feeling better.

Your spinning is lovely even when you are drugged up to the gills! I’m sorry about the adverse reaction to the wine. Thank goodness for Benadryl!
