Napa Love, Volcanic Woes

Even though I’ve picked up my knitting again, I really have nothing to show you. I’m almost halfway through the Ocean Feathers Stole, I finished one of the Monkey Envy socks, and I got a few more inches done on the Springtime Triangle Shawl. So progress shots would be boring and dull, even though I’m making some headway.

Instead, I thought I’d show you what’s been on my wheel. Here’s another 4ozs of more Merino roving from Yarn Wench that I spun up into another 3ply. This colorway is called Napa.

I think this one turned out much better then my first attempt at 3ply. Though I haven’t counted the exact yardage, I know there’s more for me to squeeze out a pair of socks. I think the singles were much more consistent too.

The colors aren’t something I’d normally pick out for me, but I seem to pick things out of my preferred repertoire when I spin. I think it’ll be interesting to see how I like to knit with these colors.

I’m really eager to get this yarn on the needles and I hope to do so once I finish with the current pair of socks on the needles. I’ll probably just do a simple rib pattern to properly show off the color pattern.

Finally, I’ll leave you with a shot of the Ko’olau Range that I took on the way home from Kailua a few weeks ago. The haze you see isn’t mist from the clouds, it’s vog, which is nasty stuff that gets blown this way when we have south winds. It’s mostly made up of volcanic ash and it’s hell on my allergies. It’s hard to complain though, when the temperatures are in the 80′s!

Oh … volcanic ashes? Hope the wind changes direction and your allergies get better.

  2. Barb Says:

    Nasty stuff, this vog, no?
    Lovely handspun. Nice colors.

  3. Lauren Says:

That sounds gross, but 80 degrees sounds lovely to me! It was a snowy rainy mess here in NYC last night…

Vog sounds like something otherworldly. No wonder it wreaks havoc with your allergies.

The spun fiber on the other hand is very beautiful. These are colors with which I am familiar since they are shades of autumn.

Our south winds bring the odors from a paper plant about 45 miles away. Your’s is much more romantic. You have been really busy , can’t wait to see a FO.

That is a really neat color combo, definitely not something I would have dreamed up myself but it looks great.
    Dude, vog sounds scary.

  7. Lisa Says:

The spinning is gorgeous! I can’t wait to see those socks someday!

  8. Dee Says:

That is the most beautiful yarn I’ve ever seen.

Vog …. ugh! I know how you feel though. In 1998 we had wildfires all around us and the smoke was horrible. You just couldn’t get away from it.

Hope the wind changes direction soon for you!

    I miss 80.

That looks great! I’m scared of knitting with my handspun because my spinning is so inconsistent I have trouble with guage. I just had to rip an entire Gretel beret because I ran out of yarn. I knew I had had plenty of yardage, so I was pretty mad. I took the hat off the needles and it looked like it should have been a sweter!

Love the spinning, it’s so pretty! I just started socks from my handspun last night and it’s nice. :)

Your spinning is lovely! Down with vog–sounds dreadful. Start showing us the knitting again real soon , please!

  13. Kelley Says:

Wow — you live in a beautiful place, except for the vog. I always like trying out new colors for socks, because I think I’ll be more likely to wear them than say, a sweater!

  14. Robbyn Says:

Your yarn is so beautiful…sigh :) You make me want to learn to spin but I have no room for a wheel and I certainly don’t have room for another stash…pout… You indicated this was slated for socks? Nutkin, perhaps?

  15. Cookie Says:

    Beautiful spinning!

And I thought smog was yucky. o.O

  16. Mokihana Says:

I miss seeing the Ko’olau’s every day since I grew up in their shadow. Despite the vog, they’re so beautiful.

    And so is your handspun!

  17. hakucho Says:

Love your pretty handspun yarn…it’s a very pretty color combo :)

  18. Jeanne Says:

Gorgeous yarn – really very nice. Since it isn’t your color, I’d be more than happy to take it off your hands…:-) Hope the winds shift, and your allergies go away!

  19. hetty Says:

Love your yarn! Never heard of vog, but it sounds nasty! Nice shot of the Ko’olau Range. And your 80F sounds great at the moment! We still have a meter of snow on the ground! Hugs!

  20. dorkyquilts Says:

Love the colors in that handspun. Your spinning is wonderful.

  21. Carrie K Says:

Allergies, insomnia and fibromayalgia? Not even the scenery fully compensate for that! But your spinning is beautiful.

  22. Roseann Says:

I love your newly spun yarn, it is so pretty! I look forward to seeing how it looks knit up and I like your idea of the simple pattern to show off the intricate 3-ply yarn. Thank you for the inspiring scenic photo.

  23. knitnana Says:

So pretty! Might not be your usual colors, but they are lovely together!!!
    (((hugs)))

The yarn looks great! I love that colorway.

And a gentle reminder that Project Runway finale is Wednesday!

  25. domesticshorthair Says:

The yarn looks great, and I love the colors.

  26. Carin Says:

The yarn is beautiful! My sympathies with regards to the vog. It’s been a few years since we had to deal with volcanic ash, definitely no fun.

  27. nova Says:

I love how colors come together is such a cool way in handspun (I guess the dyeing is a big part of that too, but you know what I mean). Gorgeous work!
