The Perfect Cure

It seems like ages since I picked up a pair of knitting needles. Although I did manage to finish a big project, I just haven’t been able to focus. I suppose all those late nights have finally caught up to me. That doesn’t mean I’ve been entirely idle. Instead I’ve been doing a lot of spinning.

My very first 3-ply yarn. The roving is called Roots from Yarn Wench and it was an absolute delight to spin. I think it’s Merino, but I’m not positive.

Can you believe I started this project way back in May of 2007? How could I let it languish for so long? I suppose that if it weren’t for the fact that Margene inspired me to start spinning again, it might have been another umpteen months before I touched it again.

For some reason, I have a hard time balancing my time between knitting and spinning. It’s either one of the other, all or nothing. One thing’s for sure, when my mind is too weary from insomnia and Fibromyalgia flares to knit the lace that I love, spinning is the perfect cure.

And you did a very nice job of spinning! The skein is fabulous…any plans? Some how when I can’t concentrate on anything else, lace seems to fit the bill. I may be a little obsessive. ;-)

Gorgeous yarn!!! I love how the colors work together but do not overwhelm each other. Instead of becoming barber pole stripes, they create a deeper color. I can’t wait to see what it becomes!

I think it’s beautiful. You are inspiring me to get something new on the wheel. I need to just take off that stuff I don’t like, and go for something I will enjoy. Yours is just gorgeous!

It’s really lovely! Any thoughts on what you will do with it?

  5. Robbyn Says:

Oh how beautiful! What a lovely yarn and the colors are just beautiful.

You are much more productive with your low-focus time than I am with mine. When I can’t concentrate, I just sit and drool :) Well, not really, but it does feel like that sometimes.

  6. Barb Says:

Pretty yarn. I think you get plenty done as it is!

  7. Agnes Says:

I am not surprised … not being to balance between knitting and spinning. I tried hand spinning … really glad that I found myself not liking it too much. But I have the same problem. I’d like to do more sewing … but … ::sigh::

  8. Jeanne Says:

Gorgeous! And 3 ply – very nice! I hope you feel better soon!

  9. Dee Says:

That yarn is beautiful! What a gorgeous color. Do you have something picked out for it already?

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Ooooh and that one is really pretty! I switch back and forth between knitting and spinning. It’s not always even, but I never feel like I’m being torn between the two. I just spin for a week if I want and then go back to my knitting!

    Very pretty. Job well done.

It looks wonderful! I do tend to spin when I can’t knit from fibro – and I’m expecting a flare now – fell on the ice AGAIN yesterday and it was a doosy! Hope your’e feeling better!

The yarn looks great. What are all of the colors that are in it? (My eyes aren’t working too well this morning for color.)

I know what you mean about the balancing act. I still feel like I need to do some weaving. (Well, actually, I do need to do some weaving, as our entryway rug is still on the loom.) I think if I didn’t have so many projects going at once, and so much stash, that I might not feel so bad.

    Yeah, right….

  14. hetty Says:

Wow! You spin too! It never ceases to amaze me how talented you are! That yarn is beautiful! Sorry to hear about your Fibromyalgia. Hope you’re feeling better!

  15. Rosa Says:

I agree! Spinning seems to relieve my stress and anxiety. I have the same issue with either knitting or spinning. I can’t do both on the same day. The new handspun is lovely. I do love the Yarn Wench.

  16. Karen B. Says:

Opal, I love the colours in the yarn you’ve spun! You are, indeed, very talented. Here’s hoping the fibro quiets down soon.

  17. Lemma Says:

Ooh, that’s pretty. The only 3-ply stuff I have tried was Navajo-plied with a drop-spindle. It didn’t turn out well, but your stuff looks fabulous. What are you going to do with it?

If I didn’t have sewing to do today, I would get my spinning back out. Still might, actually…

  18. Meredith Says:

Wheeeeeeeee! a post! and gorgeous handspun! Spinning must be in the air…I got the new Woodland Woolworks spinners and weavers catalogue yesterday and I think it may finally be time for the new Lendrum…or a Kromski Minstrel, but the Lendrum, though less beautiful, has so many options!

hugggggggggggssssssssss to all at Chez Akamai

  19. Cookie Says:

    Beautiful yarn!

I think as long as you’re enjoying yourself, taking a little break from one or the other is fine. Rediscovering the love is a happy thing.

  20. Robin in VA Says:

    OH MY…that’s GORGEOUS!!

  21. dorkyquilts Says:

YOU SPIN, TOO? Wow, not only do you knit beautifully, you spin beautifully, too! That is gorgeous stuff!

  22. Kyle Says:

yummy yarn – all this spinning I see everyone doing is persuading me to look into it again… although I have other things I wanna try first… it’s still a contender in things to obsess over…

your newly birthed yarn is a good convincer too; beautiful colors!

  23. Carin Says:

I just love your taste in all things fiber. The yarn is beautiful. Did you Navajo ply it?

  24. Kelley Says:

Wow! That is gorgeous. I must pick up spinning one of these days. Soon.

  25. becky Says:

That is absolutely gorgeous yarn! Congratulations. One day I’ll have a spinning wheel.

  26. Peggy Says:

It has been a long time, I had almost forgot that you spin. What lovely yarn. It just happens to be my most favorite colors!

  27. Jenny Says:

    Beautiful yarn!

  28. *karen Says:

    So very pretty.

  29. Shelly Says:

Oh my – that is stunning!! I know you will love it when you knit it up! Keep that wheel moving!

  30. tiennie Says:

    Gorgeous spinning!

  31. Jane Says:

Your yarn looks great! I don’t spin nearly as much as I knit so when I start spinning, I also go on a spinning jag for awhile. Of course, the more you spin, the more you will have to knit. I call that a win win!

  32. Kim Says:

That yarn is beautiful. I ended up not going to knit nite. The temptation to get takeout from the thai garage and watch Lost and Survivor was too great. Here’s to cocooning.

A very good friend of mine also uses knitting/spinning to help with her fibromyalgia flares. You do such beautiful work.

  34. nova Says:

I have been picking one or two days a week to spin. It’s been a nice balance with the knitting. But I have also been quilting lately, so that has thrown a kink in my “scheduling” and then of course there is all that baking I do…

  35. Teri Says:

    Preettty colors!!
