I’ve been attacked by a viscous virus known as Second Glove Syndrome. Hetty knows of that which I speak.
I started in enthusiastically as most knitters do when embarking on a new project. Then I got to the fingers. Pesky fingers. Still, I muddled my way through them. That is until I got to the thumb.
Do you see a finished thumb?

No. You don’t.
I let that glove sit and languish for well over a two weeks and Christmas is soon becoming nothing but a distant memory. I let distractions get in the way of the goal line. There were socks, earrings, and there was even a new camera.
In desperation, I joined a group in the hopes it would motivate me. The thing is, if you don’t ask for help then you probably won’t get it and I just couldn’t muster the courage to ask.
So I settled in and had a little talk with myself. It basically went something like this:
“Friend has cold hands. Friend need gloves. Finish gloves.”
“I don’t want to finish gloves. I hate knitting fingers.”
“Friend need gloves.”
“I hate fingers.”
“Friend need gloves.”
“Can I at least cut her fingers off first?”
That went well. Don’t you think?
So I let it go and knit sleeves until I finally got so disgusted with this albatross around my neck that I threw the second glove on the needles, thus bypassing the thumb. I figured I’d deal with fingers and thumbs another day.
Unfortunately for me, the body of the glove went by rather quickly.

Argh. Time to bite the bullet and knit fingers.

ROFLOL – I agree – I am in the same spot with mine. I do like how those are coming out though – maybe its the colors – so nice and warm looking.
Keep at it – they will be done soon!

Haha, nice. I don’t think she’d want cut off fingers…
I love that color blue, very pretty! That’s one of the pairs I have marked to make after I try the mittens first. I’m still yarn hunting…

They’re very pretty mittens, even if you don’t like to knit fingers. :-) I know what you mean, I knitted my first sweater two months ago and I’ve only seamed up on sleeve. The rest has been sitting on my dresser for two months. I will finish it this weekend!

They’re gorgeous! You can do it, no you MUST do it! Friend still have cold hands, I’m sure! And you’ve only got four fingers to knit (er, and then the two thumbs, but we’ll leave that till later, okay?)
Really lovely gloves, and honestly? I haven’t tackled stranded gloves yet, only mittens. I’m impressed.

Now that mantra is stuck in my mind like a song … knit fingers, knit fingers, knit fingers!!! LOL

I’m with you on knitting fingers. That is why I knit mittens instead of gloves. They keep your hands warmer (of great concern here), and there are fewer fingers to knit.
The glove is beautiful though. You should finish it. 8-)

You are a riot! Before reaching for any knifes, please reconsider. Fingers are a bit awkward, but you don’t have to resort to such desperate measures. Have you tried the small 4″ dpns? A glass of wine?

LOL! I say instead of your friend losing some fingers, you might just have to tough it out and knit them!

When I made all the Dashings and Fetchings for Christmas I didn’t do any thumbs until the very end – I hate doing thumbs (so I’d hate fingers). Maybe just send it to her without it – tell her its the latest fad.

Fingers are exactly why I haven’t tackled gloves yet! You have to finish them though, they’re way too pretty to leave unfinished.

i think i understand your ‘block,’ which is why i do fingerless mitts. doing the thumb of the maine morning mitts was just enough – i don’t think i could manage more digits…i had a hard time finishing ‘knucks,’ i still have the finger parts of one ‘knuck,’ though i did finish a pair about a year or two ago….

Something I’ll probably never knit. Yours are gorgeous! Maybe you can just bite off her thumb? Everyone should have a good friend like you :)
January 17th, 2008 at 3:34 am
I’m giggling – no offence :) I’ve never knit gloves and, in all honesty, probably never will. But you can’t imagine how I dread doing mitten thumbs – even the plain, old non-stranded kind.
I know you will manage though – you’re not the type to let this kind of things defeat you.
And in any case – biting the bullet and knitting the fingers is *way* better than biting the fingers and knitting the bullets :)

January is not over yet. You’ll finish them, just think of all the things you can knit guilt-free once they are done!
January 17th, 2008 at 4:08 am
Amputation is not the answer! Belive me! LOL! I know you will get to those pesky fingers/thumbs eventually. Nice to know I’m not the only one who hates to finish something :-)
January 17th, 2008 at 6:41 am
Well now come on. Just knit the second glove first. That works for me. They are beautiful even without fingertip!
January 17th, 2008 at 7:38 am
While I am sure your friend will appreciate the gloves, I don’t think your friend (or any friend) would appreciate having their actual fingers cut off.
Now maybe leaving the fingers exposed would be ok….
January 17th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
I really doubt I would ever knit gloves with fingers no less…good for you getting this far :) You must…have to finish them, they’re beautiful. It would be a sin to leave them unfinished :)
January 17th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Fingers and thumbs. But points for thinking of cutting off your friend’s fingers! lol. Those are some gorgeous gloves.
January 17th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
Yep, you just have to do it!
January 18th, 2008 at 7:35 am
Obviously a close relative to S3 – second sock syndrome – and S3 II – second sleeve syndrome.
Have you tried mittens?
And what does a Hawaiian whine need gloves for, anyway? The air conditioning can’t be THAT bad…
It’s supposed to get down below zero here this weekend.
Trade?
