Out of the dark…

Posted under Fair Isle & Gifts and Charity & cats

It’s a dark and dreary day here in Hawaii. A perfect day for staying in and curling up with my knitting. Before I get to that I thought I’d share a Scheyer update.

It’s our second week with him and he’s actually let us pet him! I cannot tell you how ecstatic I am. It took all I had not to squeal with excitement, which would have totally scared him off into hiding for another week. Let me tell you, this boy has quite the purr box.

Scheyer is very much the night owl. Luckily, I am too and I managed to get a better shot of him as he looked warily on.

In the midst of all this kitten love, there has been knitting. I managed to finish off the three-colored gloves and start another pair.

(Since it’s been such a cloudy day I had to use the OTT Lite for these craptacular pictures.)

Pattern: Annemor #8 from Selbuvotter by Terri Shea

Yarn: Knitpicks Palette in Blush and Cream; Knitpicks Essential in Grass

Needles: Size 2US / 2.75mm

Started: 12/11/07

Finished: 12/26/07

While I really like the results of working with the three colors, I doubt I’ll be trying this again anytime soon. I had a hard time maneuvering the three different yarns with my two hands and it really disrupted my rhythm. This really frustrated me.

I think it also skewed my tension as these came out a lot smaller then my other gloves. I’m hoping that blocking will stretch them out a little. I’m going to have to wait for the atmosphere to dry up (it is very humid here, ick) before I block them though.

As soon as these were off the needles, I threw another pair on.

These are also from the book Selbuvotter. I actually finished the hand while at knit group last night, but when I came home I noticed I left out a crucial part of the design on one side. I just couldn’t live with that, so I ripped it all out.

It wasn’t even that painful since I’m having so much fun with them. Since I have to wait before I can put in an order more glove and mitten yarn, I see this as a chance to give to do more of what I love until more precious supplies arrive.

At least, that’s what I keep telling myself. The other half of my brain is wondering if I could possibly start the Wing O’ The Moth this weekend. That yarn I got for Christmas is really calling me.

I have a litany of justifications as to why it would be perfectly reasonable to cast on. Besides, how much harm could it be to have a weekend project for me? This is supposed to be my hobby after all, not a job.

I see yarn winding in my future.

Well, you make a good enough argument that I say go for it — Cast it on - and take a much deserved break from Holiday knitting.
Scheyer is really making great strides with warming up to you! Enjoy the day knitting - I really want to have a day of peace here soon!

I’m so glad Scheyer is adjusting well.

Love the gloves! I hope the sun comes out for you soon.

So glad Scheyer is settling in and getting comfortable. Those gloves are just gorgeous - and I love the blue and white one - just lovely!!!

Since my squealing won’t hurt Scheyer … I am grateful that I can express my excitement without restraint! LOL! Hello Scheyer! :D

Scheyer is such a handsome kitty (I’d better not let Hannah look…)

The gloves are fantastic! And you know, I really don’t think you need justification for the shawl- you need to have different types of knitting on the needles, to suit your different moods…. :)

He looks a lot like my cat Seth looked when we got him! Now that I can get a good look at him. He was the smallest most pathetic looking kitten when we took him home, and now he’s massive.

Love the gloves! If they don’t fit I know where you can send them! ;) The new ones look gorgeous too. I finally decided to order that damned book lol. Haven’t actually done it yet, but I am!

    He’s really coming around!!
    I REALLY love those gloves!!

It was dreary and rainy here today, too. Perfect for staying in and knitting, though I did have a few errands I had to run.

The gloves are beautiful and the new pair looks promising as well. I’m glad to hear that Scheyer is coming out of hiding on occasion. He’s a very handsome boy.

I am thrilled to hear that Scheyer is letting you pet him, he will soon figure out that he is in kittie heaven. Your gloves are so beautiful!!! I love how the three colors work together, I am so inspired. Happy New Year!

your tri-color annemor gloves are beautiful! glad to see scheyer coming around. hope to make it to the meet-up on the 3rd - trying to start the year out right….

  12. Carrie K on 28 Dec 2007 at 5:10 pm #

You really must cast on with your Christmas yarn - it would be rude not to, no?

Scheyer is so cute! The tri color gloves came out really beautifully. Best to rip the mittens if they were really bugging you.

I can just imagine the dreariness of Hawaii. Poor you. ;)

    Scheyer is such a cutie!

I love those gloves but it still cracks me up that you are glove obsessed in Hawaii :)

  14. fleegle on 29 Dec 2007 at 1:31 am #

You absolutely need to cast on the Moth. It will be a nice change from handwear. Which, by the way, are gorgeous! I do have to chuckle at someone in Hawaii knitting gloves and mittens, though :)

Once he discovers the pleasures of a chin tickle, you won’t be able to get Scheyer out of your lap. That’s what happened to Laptop…well of course!

Scheyer is just such a cutie - glad he’s coming out of his shell. The gloves are gorgeous! And yes, you should totaly cast on for a new shawl….

  16. Jenny Raye on 29 Dec 2007 at 3:28 am #

Wow, Opal! Those gloves are amazing!

So glad Scheyer is becoming more comfy in his new home. Before you know it he’ll be curled up in your lap while you knit.

  17. Robbyn on 29 Dec 2007 at 3:59 am #

Ahhh - those gloves came out splendidly! Just gorgeous - it’s amazing the visual difference three colors makes (as opposed to just two).

And right back into aother pair? You’re having a good time with this stuff, aren’t you?

I can hear WOTM calling you - and I’m all the way over here in New England :) I can just imagine what it sounds like to you!

  18. textillian on 29 Dec 2007 at 4:10 am #

My! What eyes Scheyer has got in the photo. Is that just a matter of the flash, or are they always like that? Mesmerizing.

The gloves look great. and the background yarn for the new gloves? I love the color! What is it?

  19. Peggy on 29 Dec 2007 at 5:21 am #

The completed glove is gorgeous and the new one OTN looks to be just as beautiful. I don’t know that I’m ready for strand work, patience wise that is. :) Actually, I think that yarn is calling my name.

Do you have a ball winder and swift? I could bring mine to MJ Thursday if you need to wind the zillion yards required for the wing… which is one impressive shawl, by the way. Though, honestly, I don’t see you waiting til Thursday to cast on for this puppy. It’s a hobby, not a marriage… you don’t need to consider monogamy… heh, maybe I’ll cast on for Icarus, too. Oh, no, yarn winding in my future…I’m still weighing Kiri vs Icarus, but Icarus is leaning ahead a wee bit.

I love the gloves, and the new one is a nice colorway.

Scheyer is a doll! Seems he’s decided to keep you;) The gloves are amazing! I couldn’t even think of doing that on knit night!

You’re too funny. “I see yarn winding in my future.” And more news of the “purr box” welcome at any time. :o)

  24. hetty on 29 Dec 2007 at 6:50 pm #

Cute purr box! Glad he’s doing well!
Hope you had a great ‘curl up and knit day’! Love your gloves. That blue colour on the new ones is gorgeous! Can’t wait to see you start the Moth shawl! It will be gorgeous too!

  25. Aim on 30 Dec 2007 at 3:18 am #

Hey, Opal, those mittens look terrific! I am so inspired by your work on these, they are lovely. I am gearing up to start my own pair of fair-isle mittens, and keep coming back to how good yours look :)

Go for the shawl, girl. If I know you, you’d start it today, and finish it by the end of the day while watching some football games !!!!!

    Happy New Year almost :)

  26. Knitnana on 30 Dec 2007 at 12:56 pm #

There’s no time like the present, dear! CAST ON! And I’m delighted that your little one is settling in more…he’s so cute.
    (((hugs)))
