Does anyone remember this?

I started that way back in January. That’s right. January. I finished the knitting in February, but I could not get myself to sew the inner lining to the body of the hat. It was just a heinous chore that I couldn’t bring myself to do.
But last week my wonderful friend Veronica graciously came to my rescue and did it for me. So now, at last, we have a finished hat.

Pattern: We Call Them Pirates
Source: Hello Yarn
Yarn: Knit Picks Telemark
Needles: size 3US needles (2 circs)
Started: January 18, 2007
Finished: July 7, 2007
No modifications were made.

I had a ball making this hat. Fair Isle is such a fun technique.
The obligatory inside shot.

And here’s a shot of the inside lining. Look at what a wonderful sewing job Veronica did! (Thanks so much, Veronica!)

There is some non-knitting news. I didn’t get much knitting done in the past couple of days because I pretty much wrecked my hands while getting some furniture put together. I finally have a decent chest of drawers. I’ve been doing without for the past year or so. You don’t want to know where I’ve been putting my clothes. As for the night stand? Ha! Let me tell you about the nightstand.
I started assembling the nightstand and remember, I am no carpenter. I thought I was doing so well. Up until I tried to put the drawers in. Now this was one of the last steps. The bottom two drawers went in smooth as silk, but. But…
… I apparently I put one piece in the wrong way and what was supposed to be a 3-drawer night stand is now a 2-drawer night stand. Basically, there’s no way the third drawer will fit into what is now a tiny space of glaring failure.
I’d take pictures, but I’m still too pissed off about it. I’ll probably put the drawer front over the mistake to cover up the ugliness. I swear the directions were too vague for inexperienced me to have known which way to put the damn sleeper thingamajig in right.
Assembling the chest of drawers went much smoother, even if it did take over 4 hours. It’s a 5-drawer piece and there were a lot of screws to drill in. Mistakes were made, but they were easily corrected. My hands basically felt and feel like mush, but it was worth it.
Despite the nightstand fiasco, I’m very proud of the job we did. The chest of drawers is functioning as it should and I find it amazing that we were able to do it considering our lack of wood working skills.
And the nightstand? Well, I can live with the mistake as soon as I make it pleasing to the eye. I don’t really *need* 3 drawers. There are worse things that could happen in life then a deformed nightstand.

omg that hat. tell me how best to convince you to make me a hat like that???? i will bake cookies, or stand on my head, or…. gimme an idea.
*hat envy*
that sucks about the drawers. i hate stuff like that. we totally put the doors to the etagere on upside down and had to take it apart and re-do it.
it stinks on ice.

It is a really cute hat! It’s not quite my style, but I do like it! Kudos on the intarsia!!!

What a special, giving friend! Sooooo, new drawers - clothes or maybe yarn, hmmmmm.

I remember when you started that hat. It looks great. Nice of your friend to sew the lining. Don’t feel bad about the furniture. I’m terrible about stuff like that. DH and the Deputy know to do it themselves and not even tell me about it.

That’s what good friends do, isn’t it :o)
Sorry about the furniture and your hands. My mom loves doing that stuff and I have no patience for it. Hope all is well.

Sux about the drawers but at least you have something functional! Cute hat!
P-Man says thanx for the birthday wishes!

i don’t usually go for skulls, but gosh, that’s a cute cap! as for the furniture fiasco - usually my husband does the assembling and i hand him the tools and nails and stuff and read the instructions - hope your hands feel better soon….

Arrrrrgh — both for the hat (in the good way)
and for the stupid drawer (arrrghhhhh - in the bad way!)

Oh my - what a pain with the drawers and such- but glad you have something to keep your clothes organized in now!
The hat looks great!
As for your hands….. Well, lets just say I am hoping they are still a tiny bit slow moving till Saterday so I can get caught up and done with next MS3 clue….

OMG… I hate doing stuff like putting together furniture. One benefit of having a boy around! No problem about the hat - I’m glad you have another FO! :)

Very cute hat! I hate putting furniture together - and always messed it up!

Nice hat. I do the same thing when I get to a point in a project where I agonize over the next step, even if it is the last step.
Sorry to hear about your furniture misadventure. I am usually the one to do the assembly in our household because: 1) I am more likely to read the directions, and 2) I am less like to curse like a sailor while doing it. Those directions can be vague sometimes, like on the Ikea stuff that I have. Oy!
I hope your hands feel better.

Hope your hands are better soon…not good for a knitter to have wrecked hands!
hugggggggggggggggssss (elvis the cat kisses the wrecked hands to make them better)

Yay, you finished your pirates hat!!! Another FO down! That is a very cute hat! Bummer about the drawers, too bad instrxns weren’t better, but now you at least have 2 great drawers to use! How about putting a hinge on the drawer front, and a cheesy makeshift shelf inside, that way you can still use the space…..?!

Oh how I HATE HATE HATE assembling anything (was I a little harsh there lol?). I hope your hands are better soon and you can get back to all your knitting. :)

Oh, that is so frustrating about the nightstand. :( Especially after you worked so hard on it…it’s different if the task isn’t that big a deal, but when it’s difficult for you already, well. It’s somehow more devastating to make a mistake.
A while back my mom had me put together a bathroom cabinet for her. I’m actually not bad at that sort of thing, but I accidentally made it so the unfinished edges faced the front, and once it was all together it was just about impossible to fix. I felt pretty bad about that, but she was very gracious about the whole thing.

Cute hands. I am sorry abour your hands. Rest them, and give your furniture a good kick. It will make you feel better. Really.

Your hat is really cute! You did a great job and it pays to have friends who are willing to do the part you hate to do. I’m sorry about the furniture faux pas and I hope your hands heal up soon. I hate to have to assemble furnture since I always get it wrong too. Still, you did well on the chest of drawers and now you have more places to store yarn!

The hat looks great!
Yeah furniture is tricky. I love putting stuff together, and usually do well with it, but every now and then I do something dumb and hate myself for days lol. Ah well, at least you have a plan, and no one would know otherwise!

Love the hat! Arr!

Great that the hat is finished!!!
(can you take the nightstand apart and start over?)
Hope your hands get back on track SOON!!
(((hugs)))

Woah! This is absolutely and truly stunning! You know, I’ve wanted to knit this pattern for so long, but I never dared start it because I was so horrified of sewing the inner lining - I’d wish I had a friend like yours who’d do that for me! Anyways, the pattern is more than awesome and so cool, and you’ve knit it up so beautifully!
I’m sorry about the nightstand incident - hope your hands are feeling better by now! And I agree with Nova, just give the furniture a good kick may help! ;)

What a fun hat, now I want to knit one! I’m glad for you that it is completed as I know how good that feels. I keep thinking of trashing that tea cup I started, what was I thinking? I ‘m glad your furniture is completed and hope your hands recover quickly as I’m sure you would like to get back to your knitting soon.

I sympathize entirely about the furniture and the nightstand nightmare. I think assembling those things is a lot of fun, but sometimes the directions are just ridiculous. I still recall the first one that ever came into our house - a stereo cabinet with slots for records (it was a long time ago!). The directions consisted of one page with an exploded diagram (no step by step for those characters!) and a big package of round fasteners and strange screws the likes of which we had never seen before (and we are both engineers!). Somehow it did get assembled, and since then each one has gotten a little easier - but it often still takes hours.
Glad to hear your hands are recovering their knitting touch.
