Jumbled

Posted under socks

It seems like the Black Rainbow Socks are just knitting themselves and I’m not too happy about that. This is one of those projects that I want to go on forever. I love the yarn. I love the stitch pattern. The only thing that has me off kilter is that the colour runs are uneven.

I’m not sure if you can tell in the photo, but the stripes aren’t the same length. I find this mildly annoying as I was using the colours to help me figure out when to stop for the heel flap. I thought that once I was done with the blue stripe, I’d stop for the heel flap. That was so not the case. There was about 3 inches too much leg and that’s 3 inches of work I had to rip out.

The problems didn’t end there. It took me about 3 or 4 tries to get the heel to turn properly because I just couldn’t parse the first row of the heel turn pattern. There was something wrong with my brain yesterday.

I also broke my desktop computer. What should have simply been a simple RAM upgrade turned into a complete disaster. I thought I did everything right, but now the computer won’t even boot up with the original stick of RAM. I really thought that I could do this since I was able to install my own Firewire card.

Since fixing the old computer would cost an arm and three legs and since I really only have two legs, it looks like I’ll have to buy a new computer. I shouldn’t complain too much, the old desktop I have has lasted me for about 4 or 5 years and that’s pretty damned good.

I’m extremely reluctant about purchasing a new computer though. Mainly because I’m wary of Windows Vista. I’ve heard a lot of Bad Things about this particular operating system and Macs are just too spendy for me. There really doesn’t seem to be too many other options though. Do any of you use Vista? How do you feel about it?

Thank goodness I still have the laptop. Otherwise Opal would be a giant crawly thing of massive Internet withdrawls. The DT’s would be loud and messy and anyone within a 5-mile radius would be running for cover while dialing 911.

On a happier note, here’s another belly shot I got of Quincy. He was really rockin’ the tummy poses the other day. And thank you for letting me vent, sometimes I just need to whine a bit. Anyone have some cheese?

I hear you about the internet DT’s. I tried that once while moving out here. No thank you. Sorry I can’t help you with Vista. We have been on Macs since 1986. Ran our business on one back in Wisconsin. I would be upset with the sock yarn, also. But I know you will make them work. Quincy is soooooooo cute. His belly shots are the best!

sorry about how the color changes are going for the socks - as for me, i like when the socks don’t match up, but i can see how it would drive you crazy if that’s not what you want; i like how tweedy they look. everytime i hear about computer woes i break into a cold sweat - machines intimidate me….

No worries, Opal. Sometimes we just have “one of those days.” Just stop and look at the adorable Quincy and know that things will put themselves to right!

What OS was the dead desktop running? I think the yarn has spoken and it wants to be mismatched;)

Thank goodness you still have that laptop. Some days it may be better just to go back to bed and pull the covers over your head! As for the mismatched sock stripes, that happens to my sister all the time. She also hates it. Much swearing. Give the socks to the cat to play with. Love those belly shots!

I have Vista - and I like it. I haven’t had any problems with it at all, and have been using it for a few months. Sorry to hear about your computer problems - always a drag! Hope today is a better day…

Opal, that is sooooooo true about withdrawal. I’m not s’posed to be on here, doing anything but prepping the cave for visitors. I just can’t seem to start my day w/o going on-line, even if I’m keeping my promise not to blog this week!!! So sad about the ‘puter mess. Upgrading is always a transition :)

Opal - Love the Quincy pictures! Some cats just seem to love to pose for pictures and others just run at the sight of the camera :)

And listen kiddo - If you’re smart enough to figure out how to make a lace shawl, you’re not going to have any problem with “Vista” when and if you decide to deal with it!

I really like your Opal sock yarn but the color run issue would make me crazy. I, too, use patterning to determine where to stop ribbing and start a heel. Three inches to rip out, ugh! Your experience has inspired me to pay better attention. I am very sorry to hear about your computer. I believe that you do not have to get Vista if you do not want it, and from what I have been hearing, you might not want it.

Haha tickle Quincy for me! That’s a bummer about your desktop… I haven’t upgraded to Vista yet, so I can’t give any feedback about that.

The socks are gorgeous! Could it be a very long color repeat? That can happen…

I’m going to ask my husband when he gets home if there is anything you can do about your computer. (He’s in the biz) He’s salvaged a lot of systems; maybe there’s something he can recommend.

Worth a shot anyway (as is Quincy - what a ham!)

    Blessings,

I’ve heard mixed reviews of Vista…our former restaurant manager bought a new laptop and had some trouble getting Vista to cooperate with his recording software (he also heads a band). Once it was worked out, he decided he liked the new O/S. Other people I’ve talked to who have Vista are liking it from the get-go. Me? I’m running a middle aged Dell on XP so can’t speak from personal experience.

And what I REALLY want to know is if you have been a good girl or if you ordered lace weight yarn from Woodland Woolworks????? Hmmmmmmmm? (I think I may succumb tonight when I get home from work.) (If I have enough money in the account.) (And maybe even if I don’t, since I’ll be depositing a big check tomorrow and it will wear a hole in my mind thinking about how to spend it anyway.)

Yeah macs are insane. I love mine though, it’s sooooo much better than our pc, although the pc is a cheap POS. I have had so many less problems with it. It’s great, I don’t know if I could go back to a pc after having a mac. I use it for school though, that’s the only reason I bought one. Web Design.
