Opportunistic Knitting

Posted under Hawai'i & socks

On Jon’s last day* here in Hawaii we took a drive out to the Pali Lookout. Unfortunately it was raining so Jon rightfully decided to forgo a photo shoot, which would have gotten his lovely camera wet. I decided to risk it with my little point and click anyway and I managed to get this picture of the clouds slowly clearing the Ko’olau Range.

After enjoying the cool winds of the Pali, we went on a driving tour of the Windward side of the island. Since I wasn’t in the driver’s seat, I gladly took the opportunity to break out the knitting needles. I managed to finish the Lagoon Pomatomus Socks and then I started a new pair of socks.

I chose some Opal yarn (ha! I still snort at the name!) that I bought way back when the yarn first debuted and they offered one of a kind colourways. I thought this would be a good colour since it’s predominantly black and hey! Project Spectrum’s colours for the months of June and July are red, black, and metallics. The yarn has some red in it and you could even stretch facts to say that the gold is somewhat metallic looking. Just squint your eyes a bit.

I chose the Slipped Ribbed Stitch, a simple pattern from the book Sensational Knitted Socks. It makes great car knitting, since the pattern is so easily memorized. Plus, it’s not too busy for the already busy yarn.

I couldn’t believe how quickly the knitting went by. Just like I couldn’t believe how fast Jon’s visit went by. I’m already looking forward to his next visit. He was really good about how I toted my knitting around with me and how I pulled it out every chance I got. A true friend understands the opportunistic knitter in every one of us, don’t you think?

Thank you , Thank you Opal for posting such inspiring pics of Hawaii! I am so in love with the place, it is really fun to see some nonboring topography (like here in the midwest)!
    ;-)
Getting more and more revved to try sock knitting….!

    So it rains in paradise?
You really are a fast knitter. The new socks look nice.

Absolutely! My family is the same way. Just used to me whipping out the needles when there is a free moment.

I must really be tired. It thought it said Jon “forged” a photo shoot. Oops.

Anyway, Opal (yes, they named the yarn after you!) you do knit like the wind and it’s always gorgeous.

I just bought some Opal yarn too… the “Neon” in a colorway full of blue/greens! :)

I love Opal yarn. I have quite a bit in my stash.

Cool photo of the clouds. I intended to get out and take a picture of some really neat clouds here today, but by the time I got the camera and went out, they had changed. Bugger!

I love seeing pictures of where you live…just so beautiful. My family and friends are also very good about my knitting anyway and everywhere I get the chance - the kids aren’t even embarrassed by it anymore! Love the Opal yarn!

Hi, Opal. I am new to your blog. Your knitting is lovely. I especially like the one that you are working on in this entry. Great!

My family is a little different. If I took out my knitting during a conversation with my father, he would be insulted and offended that I was paying attention to something else.

Most of my friends, though, seem to understand :)

My DH is very good about me taking my knitting along everywhere and isn’t even embarrassed when he comes home from work early to find me in the front yard with the spinning wheel. (We live in the “burbs”, so this might be embarrassing to some people to have the neighbors see my hobby.) He’s such a keeper.

Pretty Hawaii picture (I’m going to get there someday) and pretty sock.

Opal, that’s a gorgeous shot from the Pali Lookout! Wow. Yet more reasons to save my pennies. The new sock also looks pretty cool. Is that the Pali Golf Course down there,or is it one of the Windward side memorial parks? I DO love the Windward Side.

I love the pictures you post! My sister knit me socks in Opal and it’s a really nice yarn with great colors. Your socks look really good to me. Nice to have someone willing to drive so you can have more time to knit :-)

What a beautiful scene in your photo! Sounds like you both had a wonderful time together and all your pretty knitting as a fibery bonus. I am amazed at your Opal yarn, all those colors! It looks especially nice in that rib, I am in awe. I, too, like to knit when I am the passenger. Bright minds think alike!

Lovely photo from the Pali. My papa-san used to take us kids up there every single Sunday, and I miss it even today. I love that misty view. Mahalo nui for the memories…
