As hard as I tried to escape the ripple madness, I finally reached my tipping point sometime last night. I’m not sure exactly what set me off, but I do know that certain persons, who I shall not name outright, were contributing factors. (Okay, so maybe I did.)
I thought to just order some yarn and use the intervening time between the time I ordered it to the time it arrives to work on my other projects. But no. I tossed and turned in bed last night thinking of ripples. Obsessing about ripples. I had to have some yarn in my stash for a small ripple project right?

I finally remembered a bag of some oddballs that’s awaiting charity pick-up. I found three colours that seemed to go together. I found a pattern. I dug out a crochet hook and at 2am I was off to ripple! Now I haven’t crocheted in a couple of years, but once I got started I was wondering why I had kept away for so long.
All sorts of old memories popped up as I my hook dipped in and out. The one I treasure most is of my mother’s mother, my Popo, crocheting afghans in front of the television set. She never used a pattern but she always managed to produce intricate patterns with multiple colours. I was always fascinated and amazed by her skill. Popo wasn’t the one who taught me how to crochet, but I do like to think that I’m carrying on her tradition of needlework in the family.

Oh no, please don’t get me hooked. I used to crochet all the time before I came back to knitting. And yes, I did ripples. Granny Squares, too. I must be strong.

Ah crochet, the ugly stunted hunchbacked cousin of knitting.
You know that you *can* knit ripples, right? :P
Seriously, it looks great so far. Can’t wait to see more.

Dear Opal,
Having done a “ripple” scarf already I have to agree that the pull of this type of pattern is very strong. Go on and make something and maybe the urge will subside. Yeah, right.

hmmmm….maybe a ripple cushion? i still have to finish the afghan i started for my daughter – it’s a crochet fan pattern…..i like the varigated yarn you chose for one of your ripples.

I like the colors you picked as well. The thing about the crochet, it goes so fast, especially in worsted weight yarn, it’s like knitting entrelec, just one more square! err, uh, ripple!

I have a ripple afghan started somewhere in my crochet stash. Maybe someday I’ll finish it… Like the colors you’re using.

When I saw your comment on my blog, I knew it wouldn’t be long. I made so many swatches last weekend. I can’t wait until my yarn gets here!

Between the Ripple Along (& there truly IS no end in sight, ya know?) & Margene & Birdsong’s doing Interweave Crochet’s Larger than Life Bag….well, the crochet bug has bitten me, too!
Since I can’t crochet without pain, I’m just doing the bag – I bought the 200 Ripple Stitches book & will knit a blanket eventually. Right now, I’m rippling along on the Chevron Scarf from Last Minute Knitted Gifts.
But those ripples are contagious….
(((hugs)))

I just picked up a copy of the new Interweave Press Crochet magazine and then I see such pretty crocheting on your blog! I understand how and why you became obsessed with these ripples, I thought I was the only one to toss & turn and think of my knitted teacups. I look forward to seeing more!

HAHA, SUCKER!!! ^_^ isn’t it so much fun watching the ripples go by? i felt the same way about this project about the familial connection – my mom didn’t teach me how to crochet, but i feel like i’m keeping the tradition going strong. in non-70s colors, that is. (brown, maroon and ORANGE was a very popular combo with her… yikes!)
