Win some, Lose some

Despite the fact that my basketball team lost their 4th game in a row (something which hasn’t happened since the ’95-’96 season), there was a bright spot here this weekend. A finished pair of Monkey socks.

Pattern: Monkey by Cookie A.

Yarn: Black Purl by Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock

Needles: size 1US / 2.25mm Knitpicks Classic Circulars

Started: January 22, 2007

Finished: February 10, 2007

This pattern was so much fun to knit up, because it was extremely easy to memorize. The yarn was heaven to knit with and even though there was a lot of color pooling I find that they’re still easy on the eyes.

The only problem I have is that they’re just a little bigger than I find comfortable. If I were to knit these up again I’ll most likely use a size 0US/2.00mm needle instead. As it is I did go down one needle size then what the pattern called for.

No, I didn’t check for gauge. I’m a fly by night sock knitter, trying them on as I go! I just underestimated the stretchiness of the Lorna’s Laces and the nature of the pattern. Luckily it’s really just a minor fit issue. They don’t slouch or sag. It’s just a preference of mine to have tighter fitting socks.

So, you win some you lose some. On the whole I think these socks are winners. Now I’m off to wrestle with a hat. It’s got some issues and I’m not happy with it at all and it’s got a big ‘L’ written all over it.

Those socks are definitely winners. I’m printing off the instructions right now. I’ve got the perfect sock yarn in mind…a Lorna’s Laces too … Black Watch.

Thanks for posting your socks on the KAL.

Hi Opal! I’m over in the SAM KAL too! Yay! And my Monkeys are just about done too! Yay! And my basketball team lost too! Er…

(At least you are still (for the time being) in the top 25. I don’t even think we are ranked any more.)

    Kudos on the Monkeys. :)

I also went down one needle size for my Monkey socks (also in Lorna’s Laces). Interestingly, I just saw someone else say that it was way too small and they had to adapt the pattern by adding stitches.

    Yours look great!

    Lovely!

Beautiful Monkeys! Maybe if you throw them in the wash they might shrink a little? Or find a family member with bigger feet?

lovely socks – i always wondered what the black purl colorway looked like knitted up-very nice! i guess i’m a fly by night knitter like you – i can more or less figure how it’ll fit as i knit and also when i see the number of cast-ons for the cuff-usually….

OOoo I like the way the color pooled though.

What does “L” stand for? What’s up with the P hat??? :)

Wow! Lovely socks! Congrats on another FO well done. That’s on my to-do list. I actually like the Black Purl colorway.

They turned out quite nicely, despite the fit issue. It’s nice to see the pattern hold its own against the variegated yarn. Lorna’s — lovely yarn with great colours, but it does seem to pool or do other weird things most of the time.

Very nice – the Black Purl looks great with this pattern. I even think the pooling worked out well.

I’m sorry to hear about your basketball team! Your Monkey socks are darling, I like the way the colors blend with the pattern creating a great looking pair of socks.
