Fracs! Fracs!

Posted under Gifts and Charity & scarves

The quest to outfit my close friends in handknits continues as I started the Danica scarf last night with some various worsted weight wools that I have lying around. (This is a really bad picture of it, but it’s the best I could do. Artistic photographer I am not.) It’s been great trying out a new technique and the instructions are very clear and easy to follow. Somehow I’ve even learned how to knit backwards, even though I’m not doing anything fancy like purling in the front and back yet.

I’m hoping this will be good gift for a male friend and I’m worried that because it’s not machine washable it will wind up either not being used or becoming fabulously felted. I’m hesitant to broach the subject with him, because I’m about as subtle as a steam train when it comes to bringing up these types of things up with friends. I tend to be blunt and honest to the point of tears.

I figure I can always give this scarf to the Dulaan Project and order some superwash yarn for my friend if I decide to go the safer route with my friend. I’d love to hear what you all have to say about giving handwash items to friends. Any disaster stories you want to share? Any encouraging heartwarming stories?

No advice or stories to share, but that scarf is very cute!

Oooh pretty entrelac! I haven’t tried that yet but hopefully some day. Funny though, I just learned to knit backwards too (in the interest of making my bobbles go faster).
I’ve only knit machine washable things for others. Even if it has to be on gentle and then flat dried, it still seems like less of a burden. The only exception to this would be my mom b/c I know she will hand wash things if needed.

Very nice! Of course, I hate to do entrelac but to each his or her own. Yes, I have knit many things that have ended up at a charity but I hope they got good use. Never fear. Your scarf looks really good.

It’s very satisfying to learn something new, and it looks great. One day I will try this tecnic too.

Well, you may remember I gave lace socks (in Zephyr) to a mutual friend of ours who knows all about taking care of handknits. Unfortunately, her DH threw one into the washing machine, leaving her with one sock which fitted her and one that fitted her youngest daughter, aged about 4 at that time.

But … give it to him anyway, and if he shrinks it, that will be his problem, not yours. It looks good and he should enjoy receiving it and wearing it, and he may never felt it.
