More on cats…

Posted under cats

Today was a very tiring day as I took both Pressie and Onyx to the vet for their 6-month checkup. The reason I took they need a 6-month checkup is because Pressie is 10 years old and Onyx is 18 years old, and our veterinarian recommends more frequent checkup for senior cats.

That’s right Onyx (above) is a whopping 18 years old! Even though she’s not as active as she once was and even though she tends to vocalize her own version of Madame Butterfly at odd moments, like 5am, she holds a very special place in my heart. She is my baby and always will be.

I have had Onyx since she was 2 months old. She’s supported me through bad boyfriends and bad jobs. She’s seen me through ill health and weathered my ill temper. Through it all she’s maintained the sweetest of dispositions and a constant wellspring of unconditional love.

At this point there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for her to make the rest of her years as comfortable as possible. I just hope that there are many more to come. Our vet has assured me that she is doing fabulously (is that word?) for her age considering she’d be pushing 90 if she were human.

I just hope Onyx can quickly forgive me for having had to take her out of her comfortable routine and suffer the horrors of a car ride then the uncomfortable manhandling of the vet, because she was not happy today! Is that the evil eye she’s giving me?

    Dear Opal

Your cats are true blue friends! I’ve seen a 20 year old cat that was still going strong. Kittys can live a very long time if they can stay out of the way of accidents! I know they will forgive you for taking them to the vet, eventually.

She looks great for an older cat!! You are one awesome cat mom!

A good vet is worth their weight in gold, or their astronomical bills, I’ve recently decided!

Very cute cats! One of my cats is 16, and I feel the same way about her. We had a scare with her this year - she couldn’t walk and meowed when we touched her. Took her to the vet - nothing wrong. I think she was faking - she was walking around on his table, jumping everywhere. Stupid cat.

That is absolutely amazing, 18! She is thriving under your loving care.

She does look great. I take my nearly-14-year-old pup in twice a year, too. I’ve had her since a year old (my mother had her for the first year). She sleeps a bit more than she used to, but there are still times when she wants to play like a puppy. And she’s always up to mooching food. Animals play such an important part in our lives, don’t they?

I know Onyx is 18 yrs of age because you have taken such excellent care of her by taking her to the vet regularly. My Chanel is not fond of the vet, either. She will be 16 yrs old next month and our Golden Retriever, Candice is 14 1/2 years old. Hopefully by tomorrow, all will be forgiven.
