The other week, Cookie suggested we knit a shawl together. We dithered between two different patterns, until we brought Megan in who decided up on the Oyster Bay Shawl. For the yarn, Cookie decided that I should use the Malabrigo Laceweight (Whales Road) she got from me many eons ago.
I have much love for it.
The big dilemma is how the yarn is working out with the pattern.
To me, it’s obvious the yarn is drowning out the pattern, but I love the way the yarn is knitting up so much that I don’t think I care.
Another look.
I think as long as I love it that’s all that matters, but I’d still like to hear your thoughts.
In the interest of personal safety, I’ve kept the camera away from the boys for the past few days. Instead I give you my blooming Kalanchoe plant.
Happy Tuesday, everyone!

Lovely! I suppose if you decide when you’ve finished that you want to see the pattern, you can just overdye it to a more solid blue. (Overdyeing is my solution to everything.)

Snicker. Are they still shunning you? The blue is very pretty, and like Carrie says, you can always drop it into a blue dyepot and soften up the varigation.

I think the color seems to overwhelm the yarn right now because there isn’t much knit. I think it will work out when the shawl is larger.

I agree with Dee! Additionally, I think you might be surprised when it’s blocked that it all works itself out. I often think lace looks like a big bunch of very unappetizing ramen noodles until blocking anyway.
I think it’ll be absolutely gorgeous.

Ditto what the more experienced knitters say. Its like that for sculpture too–sometimes its hard to say in the beginning whether something is going to work. Of course there are also times when you can tell right away! ;-)

I myself like shade variations in yarn…it makes it more interesting. I think your shawl is very pretty and looks so soft and cuddly!
I also love kalanchoes…yours are beautiful!!

Do I know you? ;^)

The yarn *is* pretty! Blocking might help make the lace pop a bit? : )
September 15th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
It will be perfect. Over dyed, under dyed… doesn’t matter. Nice for y’all to give Cookie a nice easy project for her to knit along with. :D

I love how your shawl is knitting up! I think the pattern will stand out more as you have more of the shawl completed. Beautiful!

Pretty colorway! Megan showed me the pattern, have fun :) Beautiful plant!
September 15th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
Ooooh I love how it’s knitting. I say knit a bit further and see, the others are probably right, the more you knit the more you’ll see.
September 15th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
That colorway is absolutely stunning. Wonderful choice!

You are doing the KAL! It looks gorgeous and wow, you’ve gotten far!
September 15th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
It’s gorgeous, and I agree that blocking will make the pattern pop more. The flowers are beautiful, too.
September 15th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
I personally don’t think it is taking anything away from the pattern. And you are right, all that matters is that YOU like it :)
September 15th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Why would you want to overdye such pretty colours? At the moment, yes, I agree that it’s drowning. It may continue to do so, and it may not. Just from looking at the balls, I would said there is too much contrast between light and dark to show a lace pattern well. But in the end, if you like it, does it matter? (Did I waffle enough? LOL!)

it’s the knitting process that counts – but i do love how it’s working up – but then i’m partial to blues….happy tuesday back at you!

I think the striping/pooling looks pretty nice and could be a nice aspect of the finished shawl.
September 16th, 2009 at 3:22 am
Gorgeous, as is!!! :)
September 16th, 2009 at 3:59 am
Oh…that’s so pretty, I agree…keep it up!!!
And I need to have info on your camera…your photos are amazing.
(((hugs)))

Since you love it, that is the right choice. I wonder how it will look as it grows. I like it so far.

That is some beautiful yarn! Love the lace too! I’m working on the Simple Yet Effective (fingering weight ) Shawl (minimal lace) and I’m loving it. (ok … the dream in color smooshy helps. ;-) )

I like it, but it’s more important that you do. Knit just a bit more, then pin it out, stretched a bit, to give you more of an idea what it will look like.

So sorry I have been missing your posts, Opal. Bloglines hasn’t been doing it’s thing. Grr! I love the shawl, and the yarn you have chosen. Glad to see you are back to your gorgeous lace Hugs!
September 18th, 2009 at 1:25 am
Yeah! Knitting!
Lovely pattern and lovely yarn. Of course, I need not say anything about your color choice.

I’m a little late to the comments but I think the shawl looks lovely and I can see the pattern just fine. :D
