On Tuesday, the skull finally started to emerge but there were some shaky moments as all I could see were stripes of black and brown. At one point my friend Paul called for a chat. What he got as a greeting was:
“Hello. I can’t see the SKULL! The SKULL isn’t THERE!”
I will say he took this proclamation with surprising calm and fortitude. He asked me to calm down and take a deep breath and explain to him what was going on. Once I finally did, we had a nice chat and he got my mind off the Illusion Skull Scarf, which I had decided to call the Invisible Skull Scarf.
Towards the end of the conversation I laid scarf on ottoman/mini-table to take a picture of it and VOILA! EUREKA! there it was! The Skull had Emerged! I think I might have pierced Paul’s ear drum with my squeal as I started to sing:
“I SEE THE SKULL”
I can only imagine what my neighbors think of my boisterous rantings. Luckily no policemen were called to the scene.
Needless to say, once I saw the Magical Skull emerge I could not put this project down. I’m now past the halfway point and I have plans for at least 2 more illusion scarves for holiday gifts. I’m even looking forward to blocking the mangled skull scarf, since I’ve never really blocked anything besides lace.
Speaking of lace, we’ll just ignore the blue blob in the corner of the room that is the Shaped Triangle. It’s not there. It’s not there. It’s not there.
And Paul, if you’re reading this? You are the best! What a guy! I just might have to make one of these for you, but if I do, you’ll still need to act totally surprised, okay?

Looking good Opal! Are your other illusion scarves going to be skulls too, or another pattern?

Cool scarf, I’ve made one in black and green last year, just found it again when I brought down the winterclothes.

What a cool scarf! I amazed at the skull emerging and what you can do with 2 different colors of yarn. I can’t wait to see it being blocked and look forward to reading about your progress.

Yo ho ho! Wonderful scarf! If you use your thumb to block the blue shawl from your field of vision it’s almost as it it doesn’t exsist :-) Honest!

I see the skull too! I’ve been wanting to try illusion knitting, it seems so fascinating.
Remember the great Mystery Book KAL you started - Whoduknit? Well - we are small in number, but having a lot of fun. Sure wish you would stop by and say hello sometime!

Great scarf, and don’t worry I’ll act surprised… besides, you know how bad my memory is. ;)
I’m glad I was able to calm you down.
