And now for something completely different…

Posted under scarves

Today I had the urge to do something completely different from my usual run of the mill lace shawls, so I started knitting the Skull Illusion Scarf by Ysolda. It will be for my best friend in the whole wide world Wendy, Queen of the Yarn Porn and Ruler of Pointy Sticks. BFF, Wendy! (Yes I’m a dork of the first degree! Embrace your inner dork!)

So far this has been a great pattern to knit up. I’m using Brown Sheep’s Nature Spun worsted for the black and a Pingouin’s Fleur De Laine for the brown. Both were marinating in my stash for an abnormally long period of time, so it’s a mighty good thing that I found a use for them.

I really wish that I lived in a climate where I could use a wool scarf, because I do adore the idea of a skull scarf. But I shall make the best of my situation and simply borrow the scarf when I visit Wendy. Whenever that may be. I’m hoping to coincide a visit with Wendy, who lives in Oregon, with a fiber festival in her area. Anyone know of a kick ass fiber festival in that region?

Speaking of gifts for dear friends, I have been asked to knit a Jayne Hat and I have to tell you all that I am of the opinion that this could be one of the ugliest hats I have ever seen. Now I’m a Browncoat and I adore Firefly through and through, but this is one ugly ass hat. Not only that, I can’t stand orange and yellow together! I can hear my mother’s voice niggling in my head as I see those colours. “Asians can’t wear those colours. It will make you look like a pumpkin.” A pumpkin!

If I make this hat for my friend David then it will officially show to the world just how much I adore this man. I wonder if there’s a Hat Curse equivalent to the Sweater Curse? Or does this really only apply to boyfriend/girlfriend relationships?

The Jayne hat is …different! But I’m sure the curse thing doesn’t apply to hats or friends…

Oh, Opal! That hat with Adam Baldwin under is indeed an ugly-ass hat… at least it truly doesn’t flatter Adam Baldwin. But if David wants such a garment, you’ll flatter him, even if the hat doesn’t. No curses there!

I love Firefly, too; cancelled way before its time. But that hat was always ugly. I don’t think the curse applies to friends.

The skull scarf will be cool.

i always wanted to try the illusion knit design - can’t wait to see how your skull scarf progresses. as for the jayne hat — hmmm, it’s — different…to each his own i guess.

“Run of the mill lace shawls”–HA! The illusion scarf is very cool though, and I love your trekking socks from the last post too.

I’m not sure about that sweater curse. I knitted a sweater in my last year of college for my then boyfriend in 1986 and we will celebrate our 20 year wedding anniversary next year.

I think your handknitted hat will only strengthen your friendship.

There’s a fiber fest in Oregon in June … Black Sheep I believe it’s called?
