Tour de Fleece – Days 1-3

My brain isn’t functioning today. Carrie K asked what was wrong with my blog earlier this morning and it just kind of  rolled over my head. It wasn’t until Cookie’s email started bouncing that I eventually found out my domains had expired.

And that’s only part of my morning.

Bottom line? This post has little chance of being coherent.

So I shall regale you with photos of what I’ve been doing for the Tour de Fleece(Ravelry link).

Here’s the rest of the Corriedale I dyed and spun into coils on Day One.

What a mess! It looks much neater the closer you get.

Day Two of the Tour had me doing even more coils. Only this time I used the Good Stuff.

I finished with the coilies with some time to spare on Day Two. So I decided to practice some corespun in preparation for Day Three.

I prepped the fiber, which is some mysterious mohair blend I picked up at MDSW back in 2008. Maybe Patrick or Roseann can help me out with the vendor’s name since they instigated the purchase.  o.O

Corespun kicked my ass. It was only thanks to Jen’s awesome video(scroll down) that I finally got the drafting down. (Special thanks to Megan for holding my hand as I alternately swore a bluestreak then cried in my coffee.)

Here’s my first successful attempt at it.

It’s not a pretty yarn, but it’s corespun and it’s what I was aiming for. Uh-huh. That’s right. Exactly what I was aiming for.

/ahem

I’ll be working on more of it today. Hopefully it’ll be finished today too as I’d like to go back to some simple vanilla yarns.

Did I burn your eyes out?

Here’s a cat to soothe them. Only I think I disturbed Sammy with all the cussin’ I did when I was trying out corespinning the first time around.

Happy Tuesday, people!

They are all beautiful! I likes bright colors. I do.

  2. April Says:

I’m liking the fun coiled craziness even if it does burn my retinas.

    Good luck refining your corespun.

I have also gotten strange looks from the boyfriend’s dog when I go through cursing jags. It’s like he asking me what the blasted problem is. Silly dog, he’s too smart for his own good.

I believe you purchased your pretty roving from the Barefoot Spinner. I am so envious of your coils, they look so hard to make. Sammy looks very content.

  4. Jeanne Says:

The coils look amazing – I really like it – not sure how it would knit up, but it would be pretty just to keep around. Have fun spinning!

  5. Angie Says:

Pretty yarns! You do such a nice job and on your first try.

Good luck with having a good day today!

You’re doing well w/ TdF. :) Sammy looks like you woke him up!
Eeks, didn’t the domain registrar send you email reminders?

  7. Megan S. Says:

Remember – if it looks like corespun, it is corespun!! I personally think it turned out marvelous.

I owed you on the hand holding – you got me through my moment of tears and curse words!

    **hugs**

Breathe. :D I am lucky because all of my domain/ hosting/ flickr pro schtuff is set to expire on Dec 31. That’s all I have to remember is to pay it by the end of the year. Easy peasy.

    good work!

  11. nova Says:

what are you going to do with the coils, Opal?

  12. Daniele Says:

I absolutely love those coils! They remind me of your jewelry. And you didn’t even have to hammer and twist them!! ;)

  13. Carrie K Says:

He does look a litle peeved. Keep it down.

Those coils are positively festive looking! Pretty yarnz.

  14. Cookie Says:

I’m so glad you got the interweb stuff sorted. I think you’re doing well with the new ways of spinning you’re learning. I’m lucky to work a spindle at this point. o.0

    Kitty! :D

    xo

  15. Abby Says:

You’re so good, taking pictures of your progress. I’ve been spinning every day as well! Even on the 4th when I got back from vacation. =) now, if only I actually photographed my progress…

I love the 2nd attempt at coiled, btw. =)

  16. fleegle Says:

Oh, Opal, what lovely worms. We have all gray ones in Georgia. Clearly, tropical worms are much more attractive.

    ****ducks and runs********

  17. Hattie Says:

    Ooooh the corespun looks neat!!!

  18. Agnes Says:

I don’t understand all those spinning terms … but one thing I know … the colours are delicious!

  19. Saffron Says:

Wow! Awseome! The coils look great! I don’t know what ‘corespun’ is though, but it’s cool that you’re learning new skillz! :)

  20. Sarah Says:

Ack! I hope getting the blog straightened out was not too much trouble.

I love the adventures in spinning art yarns.

    xo

  21. textillian Says:

Roseann is correct. The roving is 50% Romney/50% mohair from Colleen at the Barefoot Spinner. (Sorry, no website that I know of.) It all looks wonderful. I have never thought of doing corespun with the mohair blend.

  22. Loopykd Says:

Your coils are beautiful! That’s talent! It’s so much harder to do a lovely art yarn it seems to me than something nice and even and smooth. Congrats!

  23. Carole (FibreJunky) Says:

Holy crap, batman! I didn’t know you could do that!! I’m impressed! Seriously!! See the exclamation point overkill???

    Dang…that is just awesome!!!
